Lewis Hamilton commits to Mercedes until 2025
Lewis Hamilton has showed his true colours by backing Mercedes team-mate George Russell after the former Williams driver crashed out of Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix on the final lap. And Hamilton has vowed to help the 25-year-old, who joined the Silver Arrows last season.
Russell was in contention for victory in Singapore as he hunted down Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris on the final lap, with his eyes firmly fixed on securing top spot for the first time this year. But as he approached turn 10, he clipped the wall and ended up crashing into the barrier.
Hamilton, who was directly behind Russell when the incident occurred, took advantage of his team-mate’s misfortune by moving up a place to secure a podium finish. But the veteran has now said he’ll offer his expertise to his colleague.
“We are all trying to be millimetre perfect out there and it’s very, very easy to make mistakes,” Hamilton explained after the race. “It’s easy for any of us, being in the position George was in. He had been driving phenomenal all weekend, so it was really unfortunate for him, last lap, to finish that way.

“But he continues to grow and improve. I know that he will keep getting stronger and faster. If there is any way I can help him be a part of that over the next couple of years… I have a lot of experience, I’ve been here a long time. Putting together a race is, not that it’s easy, but the race is where I’m most comfortable on track. It’s just about keeping your head down.
“If you look at last year I made a mistake at turn seven and went off and crashed in the wall. It can happen to any of us. It’s just one of those things.”

Russell was visibly emotional as he spoke to Sky Sports in the aftermath of the crash. And he explained that he was heartbroken. “So just sorry to the whole team,” he said. “It was a really challenging race, the tyres were dropping off and you are pushing the limits. That’s how racing should be, you make a small mistake and you are bitten for it.
“It’s heart-breaking after such a great weekend – the car has felt great, qualifying was great, the race was great, we were bold with the strategy. I feel like I let myself and the team down. It’s tough but we will come back.”
