Daniel Ricciardo has shared a gruesome picture of his hand injury after he suffered a broken metacarpal in a crash at the Dutch Grand Prix two weekends ago. The popular Aussie has missed back-to-back races as he continues his recovery.
The Australian driver was heading into Tarzan corner at the Zandvoort circuit during practice for the Dutch GP when ran wide. With McLaren driver Oscar Piastri already wedged into the barrier following his own crash, Ricciardo had nowhere to go except into the wall himself.
Ricciardo was unable to complete the rest of the Dutch GP weekend with the medical team discovering that he had broken a bone in his hand as a result of the crash. The 34-year-old has since undergone surgery, and he revealed the stitching in a post to his Instagram account on Friday.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner addressed the severity of Ricciardo’s problems, telling Sky Sports: “He’s headed off today to Barcelona. They may even have a little operation on him tomorrow to tidy up where that break is, it’s quite a clean break.

“Then of course it’s all about the recuperation and how long that takes. Any normal human being would be 10-12 weeks but we know that these guys aren’t normal. So it will all be about the recovery process – is it going to be three weeks? Will it be a month? Is it six weeks? Nobody really knows.”
Red Bull bosses have since claimed that Ricciardo will miss the upcoming race in Singapore. Even if the Aussie could fast-track his recovery, the circuit is seen by many drivers as the most physically demanding of the season thanks to its twisty nature and the extreme heat, so this would be a tough race to return to.

F1 heads to Suzuka the following weekend for the Japanese Grand Prix. Ricciardo’s involvement here will be touch and go with the Qatar Grand Prix most likely to set the stage for the Australian driver’s return to the grid.
In the meantime, Liam Lawson will hope to continue his impressive start to life on motorsport’s biggest stage. The young New Zealander impressed at Zandvoort after stepping in at short notice to make his F1 debut in Ricciardo’s place, before building on that display with a strong P11 finish at the Italian Grand Prix.
