Felipe Massa is convinced that Fernando Alonso knew everything about “crash gate” after several telling conversations he had with the Spaniard following the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix controversy. The Brazilian is pursuing legal action against both F1 and the FIA over the outcome of the 2008 World Championship and the damages caused by the events in Marina Bay that denied him his first F1 title.
The Brazilian was in pole position in Singapore before Renault driver Nelson Piquet Jr deliberately crashed into a wall to bring out the safety car that allowed team-mate Alonso back into the race. The situation killed Massa’s momentum as he dropped to 13th place while Alonso won the race.
Massa would go on to miss out on the F1 crown by a single point to Lewis Hamilton, who finished third on the day. The ex-Ferrari driver is now looking to receive financial reimbursement for the money he lost by slipping from the top spot in the standings and may even push to have the result overturned – although FIA rules state that once the winning driver receives the champion’s trophy, the outcome cannot be changed.
In a wide-ranging interview with Motorsport Brazil – as per DAZN – Massa launched an attack on Alonso, who he says always tried to skirt around the subject every time “crash gate” was brought up. “We talked about it on some occasions, but he always changed the subject,” he said.

Felipe Massa claims Fernando Alonso knew about crash gate (Image: GETTY)
“I spoke to Alonso on a few occasions about the ‘Crashgate’, when we were teammates, and logically, Fernando always insinuated that it wasn’t his fault, but he always changed the subject.
“I never had a clear conversation, when a person accepts and speaks is when that person is clear about things. When the person does not want to speak in the right way, we know that maybe he knew everything. I’m sure he knew it”
“Well, with Nelson Piquet Jr. I spoke after what happened, in 2009, and obviously we don’t have a great relationship. So anyway, everything he tried when he uncovered it is clear, everyone knew it.
